Where to find Course Rating, Slope and par

These three numbers describe the difficulty of a course from a specific set of tees. They are printed on every scorecard and listed on the course's official handicap form. Each tee box has its own values.

  • Course Rating — the score a scratch golfer (HCPI 0) is expected to shoot, to one decimal place. Typically 65–76.
  • Slope Rating — a measure of relative difficulty for a bogey golfer compared to a scratch golfer. Range 55–155, standard value 113.
  • Par — the standard score for the course, usually 70–72 over 18 holes.

Outside Finland, your national federation publishes course rating files alongside the scorecards. The R&A also hosts an official course handicap calculator for reference values.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the result rounded differently than I expected?
Per Rule 6.1, Course Handicap is rounded to the nearest whole number only when applying net double bogey adjustments. The Playing Handicap is calculated from the unrounded Course Handicap, then rounded. A Course Handicap of 17.4 with a 95% allowance gives round(17.4 × 0.95) = 17, not round(17 × 0.95) = 16.
