What Is a Green Card

A golf green card is a certificate of golf knowledge and skill that grants the player acceptance into the World Handicap System (WHS). In Finland the system is administered by the Finnish Golf Union (Suomen Golfliitto) and member clubs handle the approval in practice. Earning a green card together with a club membership gives you the right to play handicap rounds. In Finland the term green card is established in everyday language and is also known as golfin ajokortti (golf driving licence).

The green card is personal and does not need to be renewed. When switching clubs the new club will usually accept a previously earned green card, but may ask for additional demonstration or a retake if needed.

Why Is It Required

The Finnish Golf Union (Suomen Golfliitto) requires a green card for acceptance into the handicap system. In practice it is widely required at member club courses. The requirement exists for three practical reasons.

Safety. A golf ball is a hard object that can travel over 200 km/h. Players need to understand when and in which direction it is safe to hit, how to act when other players are nearby and what to do when a ball is heading toward someone (shout "fore!"). Without this basic knowledge the course would be a dangerous place.

Pace of play. A round of golf normally takes about four hours. If a player does not know the basic playing routines, they slow down every group behind them. The green card test verifies that a player knows the fundamentals: when to move forward, how to handle drop situations quickly and when to let a faster group play through.

Course care. A golf course is a living playing surface that requires considerable upkeep. Players are expected to repair their own marks: fill divots (chunks of turf displaced by a shot), fix ball marks on the green and rake bunkers. These skills are part of the green card practical test.

What Does It Cover

The green card test consists of two parts: a written exam and a practical on-course assessment. Both must be passed before the card is awarded.

Rules knowledge. The written part covers the most important parts of the Rules of Golf: how to handle penalty areas and out of bounds (OB), lost balls, provisional balls and the basics of the handicap system. You do not need to memorise the entire rulebook, but you need to handle the most common situations that affect the flow of play.

Etiquette and conduct. Where to stand when someone else is hitting, how to move on the green without leaving marks, when to stay quiet and how to signal slower play. Etiquette is not written in the rulebook the same way as the playing rules, but it is an essential part of golf culture.

Course care skills. In practice you learn to fill divots with sand or seed (the course provides instructions), repair ball marks on the green with a repair tool and rake bunkers after your shot.

Pace of play. Skill assessment in the practical part is tied to target pace of play times for the course. There is no set stroke limit. If a player cannot complete the course within target times due to a lack of essential golf conduct skills, the examiner has grounds to fail the test.

How to Get One

Earning a green card is a straightforward process. Here is a step-by-step guide.

1. Find a golf club. Nearly all Finnish golf clubs run beginner courses that prepare you for the green card test. Check your nearest club's website for schedules. Many clubs start courses in spring as soon as the season begins and run them throughout the summer.

2. Complete the written part. The written part covers the rules of golf and on-course conduct. It must be completed before the practical part. At some clubs the theory part can also be completed online independently.

3. Play the practical part on the course. The practical part means playing a minimum of three holes on the course where an examiner appointed by the club assesses your playing conduct. There is no set stroke limit. The assessment is based on safe and smooth on-course behaviour.

4. Receive your green card. After passing the test the club registers your green card in the Finnish Golf Union system and it appears in the eBirdie app. After this you can join the club as a member and start playing handicap rounds.

Cost and Duration

The combined price of a beginner course and the green card test varies by club and package. In Finland the typical price is between 50 and 150 euros. Most course prices include professional instruction, equipment rental and range balls. It is worth noting that the green card test must always be received separately and no course can automatically include the card being granted.

Most courses are completed in a single day. A typical course lasts three to six hours and covers both theory and practical instruction. Some clubs split the teaching into two short sessions, for example over two consecutive evenings.

It is worth comparing what clubs in your area offer. Prices may include different things and some clubs bundle the package with membership for the rest of the season.

After the Green Card

The green card together with a club membership gives you the right to play handicap rounds. This is where the actual golf journey begins.

Join a club. In Finland, club membership is practically required to play on courses. Membership typically includes the right to book tee times, enter competitions and use the club's practice facilities. Many clubs offer discounted memberships for beginners during their first season.

Get a handicap. A handicap expresses your playing ability as a number and enables fair competition between players of different levels. After earning your green card your handicap starts at 54 and updates based on your scored rounds. You can register rounds from as few as 9 holes. Learn more in our golf handicap guide.

Book tee times. Once you are a club member, you can book tee times through the club's booking system or a golf app. Booking is easiest to do online or through an app where you can see available times directly.

Keep improving. The green card is only the beginning. Taking lessons from a professional, practising at the range and playing regularly are the best ways to improve. Many clubs organise beginner competitions and guided playing rounds, which are a good way to gain more experience.

Green Card in Other Countries

The green card system is not unique to Finland. Several European countries may require a similar certificate for course access. For example in Sweden the equivalent is known as "grönt kort" and in Germany as "Platzreife".
